MAG to scale back flights to stabilise operations, MD says

Following several flight disruptions this month, Malaysia Aviation Group (MAG) has announced plans to scale back its network from now until the end of the year.

In a statement, MAG group managing director Izham Ismail explained this decision would allow the company to implement necessary measures to stabilise operations.

“This is to ensure the long-term reliability of our fleet and robustness of our operations and enhance our ability to ensure our customers on Malaysia Airlines (MAS), Firefly and Amal services face minimal disruptions and have the best experience possible flying with us,” he said.

However, Izham did not specify how much scaling back would be made or which route would be affected by the move.

Previously, Izham apologised for the recent increase in flight delays and cancellations affecting MAS and Firefly services.

His apology came after at least 30 Malaysians and passengers of other nationalities were stranded for over 24 hours on Aug 13 at Qatar’s Hamad International Airport due to multiple cancellations and delays on flights bound for Kuala Lumpur.

The affected flight was reportedly a codeshare between Qatar Airways and MAS.

Bernama also highlighted flight delays for Firefly flights at Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Airport in Subang and MAS flights at KLIA.

Ensuring safety, reliability

While acknowledging the inconvenience these changes may cause, Izham emphasised that the group's top priority is ensuring the safety and reliability of its operations.

He stated that maintaining all aircraft in optimal condition is crucial for safe and efficient travel, aiming at preventing further disruptions.

Izham also noted that by temporarily reducing the network, MAG could focus on minimising potential disruptions and improving travel experience.

The goal is to ensure that passengers flying with Malaysia Airlines, Firefly and Amal experience minimal delays and a seamless journey.

“MAG deeply regrets the significant inconvenience the flight cancellations will cause to our passengers.

“We appreciate our customers’ understanding and support as we work through these challenges,” he said.

Yesterday, former transport minister Wee Ka Siong called for the government to urgently intervene and investigate MAS, claiming the airline is facing a crisis of confidence due to a series of recent incidents involving its aircraft.

The MCA president emphasised the importance of government action to support the airline, aimed at eliminating these issues and preventing similar incidents from occurring in the future.
