Umno vice-president Johari Abdul Ghani today said BN is likely to name its candidate for the upcoming Mahkota by-election next week.

According to Johari (above), Johor Menteri Besar Onn Hafiz Ghazi will announce the name of the candidate chosen to defend the seat won by BN.

“I think MB (Onn) will make an announcement... maybe next week,“ he told reporters in Morib today.

Johari, who is also plantation and commodities minister, said Umno has shortlisted two or three potential candidates for the seat under the Kluang parliamentary seat.

The Mahkota seat fell vacant after the incumbent Sharifah Azizah Syed Zain, 63, died while receiving treatment at Enche’ Besar Hajjah Khalsom Hospital, Kluang on Aug 2.

Commenting further, the Titiwangsa MP said the political atmosphere suggests that BN and its allies cannot feel comfortable in any election.

“In today’s Malaysian politics, there is no such thing as a safe seat. Political dynamics have changed, so no party can take victory for granted.

“You win big or small, there is no guarantee you can win again with the same majority.

“So, it is important for the party to concentrate fully,” he said.

The Election Commission has since set the nomination date on Sept 14, early voting on Sept 24 and polling on Sept 28.
