Seputeh DAP strikes back, Youth wing to make report against Akmal

Seputeh DAP Youth will lodge a police report tomorrow against Umno Youth chief Dr Muhamad Akmal Saleh, whom it accused of making slanderous statements against DAP vice-chairperson Teresa Kok.

According to a media invite, the report will be lodged by the wing’s chief Joel Jalleh at the Sri Petaling police station in Kuala Lumpur at 11am.

This comes in the wake of Kok, who is also the MP for Seputeh, sending a legal notice to Akmal (above) seeking RM25 million in damages.

This was over the Umno leader calling her an “old nyonya” who should not have interfered in Islamic affairs, and saying he asked the government to prepare a non-halal logo to be stuck on her forehead.

“We await your response without delay.

“If our client does not receive any satisfactory response from you within seven working days from the date of receipt of this notice, our instructions are to initiate legal action with no further reference to you,” the notice read.

In response, the Merlimau assemblyperson said he was prepared for a courtroom battle, adding that he would never “surrender”.

Akmal had lashed out at Kok, who objected to a proposal by Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Religious Affairs) Mohd Na’im Mokhtar for all food establishments that do not serve pork or alcohol to obtain halal certification.

Kok had said the move would burden businesses and subject Malaysia to global ridicule.

Following this, 50 police reports were lodged against the DAP leader, who is now being investigated under the Penal Code as well as the Communications and Multimedia Act.

In July, another former Umno firebrand Jamal Md Yunos, who is better known as the leader of the infamous “red shirts”, was forced to fork out RM300,000 to Kok over a defamation suit she had filed against him.
