PAS Youth warns govt to stop silencing critics, mulls street protests

PAS MUKTAMAR | The PAS Youth wing today warned Putrajaya to start heeding its critics or face the risk of being brought down via street protests.

Speaking at the wing’s muktamar in Temerloh, Pahang this morning, its chief Afnan Hamimi Taib Azamudden lambasted the Pakatan Harapan-led federal government for trying to silence its dissenters.

“They (Harapan) went to the extent of lying down on the street during protests just so their voices could be heard. But now, after they came into power, they themselves became tyrants to silence the people’s voice, arresting people and getting their vengeance (against their political opponents).

“To the people in power, we are telling you now. The more you try to stop us from stating the truth, the higher our fighting spirit against your evilness becomes,” Afnan (above) said.

“We are not willing to see our beloved country get destroyed by your misguided lust! We are willing to die fighting for the truth until we get victory.

“If you continue to ignore dissent like ‘lembu kenyang’ (a cow that is full), we the Malaysian youth are ready to take it to the streets if we have to, just like what you did before, to bring you down and seize the government from you,” he said.

Earlier in his speech, Afnan, who is Alor Setar MP, raised the issue of “excessive actions” taken by the government against those who criticised its policies.

According to him, some of them were even arrested and had their communication devices seized by the authorities for speaking out.

Afnan pointed to the country’s decline in this year’s World Press Freedom Index, which he said signified a worsening situation in the freedom of speech.

“The Madani government has become more iron-fisted, despite (some of their leaders) being the champion for freedom of the press, fighting for the rights to speak up, they even took it to the streets with some sleeping on roadsides for the cause.”
