Only Hadi is strong, PM quips

PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang is the only strong politician, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim quipped today.

This comes after Hadi called Muslim leaders in Putrajaya ineffective in controlling their non-Muslim counterparts.

"It's ok, only he (Hadi) is strong," Anwar said in brief when met by reporters after Friday prayers in Kajang today.

Yesterday, Hadi claimed that weaknesses among Muslim leaders in the Madani coalition resulted in non-Muslim government leaders “going overboard”.

“It shows how ineffective the Muslim leaders in the government are.

“They can’t even handle their non-Muslim colleagues, resulting in the latter ‘going overboard’. This is a weak approach,” he was reported as saying at the closing of the PAS Youth muktamar in Temerloh, Pahang.

Hadi added that the incompetency of Muslim leaders in the government is also affecting the religion.

“That is why we see upsetting issues (cropping up). Non-Muslims are getting bolder in attacking and speaking out about Islamic issues.

“The latest is about apostasy and halal and haram,” the Marang MP alleged, alluding to the proposal to mandate halal certification on eateries not serving pork and alcohol.

Recently, DAP MP Teresa Kok came under police investigation following her remarks over the proposal to mandate halal certification on restaurants and food companies that do not serve pork and alcohol, adding it would burden businesses and could make Malaysia an object of ridicule abroad.

She was responding to Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Religious Affairs) Mohd Na’im Mokhtar, who said the government is mulling the mandatory halal certification proposal.

This sparked backlash, including from Umno Youth chief Dr Muhamad Akmal Saleh, who accused Kok of meddling in Islamic affairs.

Kok had since filed a suit against the Umno leader.
