Second assassination attempt on Trump foiled

Former United States president Donald Trump escaped a second attempt on his life.

International media reported that the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) foiled the assassination attempt while the Republican presidential candidate was teeing off at a golf course in West Palm Beach, Florida on Sept 15.

It was reported that US Secret Service agents fired on the gunman hidden in nearby bushes, who fled and dropped an AK-style assault rifle. He was nabbed a short while later.

According to the BBC, Trump was 300 to 500 yards away from the bushes where the suspected gunman was hidden.

It reported that Secret Service agents recovered not only the assault rifle but also a scope, two backpacks and a GoPro camera left by the suspect at the scene.

It was reported that a witness saw the suspect jump into a black Nissan and flee upon being fired on by US agents.

The witness reportedly snapped a photo of the vehicle’s registration plates and sheriffs later stopped the vehicle and detained the suspect up north in Martin County.

It was reported Trump assured in an email to supporters that he was “safe and well”.

“Nothing will slow me down.

“I will never surrender,” the presidential candidate wrote.

The second attempt on Trump’s life came nearly two months after a man tried to gun him down during a rally at Butler, Pennsylvania. 

The assassination attempt only resulted in an injury to Trump’s ear.

White House relieved Trump safe

Citing unnamed law enforcement officials, US media named the suspect as Ryan Wesley Routh, 58, from Hawaii.

On its part, the BBC found social media profiles that matched that name, indicating that Routh called for foreign fighters to partake in Ukraine’s battle against Russian invaders.

It also reported that President Joe Biden and Vice-President Kamala Harris had been briefed about the incident.

“They are relieved to know that he is safe. They will be kept regularly updated by their team,” the White House said.

Harris posted on X that she was given a briefing on the matter and was glad Trump was unharmed. 

“Violence has no place in America,” she wrote.
