Wangsa Maju MP files report on 'failure' to meet traders over eviction notice

Wangsa Maju MP Zahir Hassan has lodged a police report against traders who allegedly made defamatory statements about him in a social media video.

In a statement yesterday, Zahir said he had viewed the video, in which a group of traders from the Wangsa Sari low-cost housing accused him of failing to meet with them regarding an eviction notice from Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL).

“I want to emphasise that these allegations are completely baseless. I have personally instructed my officers to meet with the concerned parties, and they are actively working to resolve the issue,” he clarified.

Yesterday, an account called “AATV Rakyat News” posted a TikTok video featuring traders making claims against Zahir.

In the video, a man said they had received a sudden eviction notice to demolish their stalls and alleged that Zahir had failed to meet them on two occasions.

The man also suggested that if Zahir was no longer interested in representing them, he should resign, allowing them to call for a by-election.

He also questioned why DBKL was quick to target their stalls while ignoring an illegal factory, which he claimed posed a threat to the nearby community.

The video has garnered over 40,000 views, with thousands of comments and shares.

‘Meetings took place’

Zahir responded by stating that he and his team are cooperating with relevant authorities to address the concerns raised in the video, including the issue of the illegal factory.

He said that his officers had conducted two meetings with traders' representatives on Sept 13 and 18 at his parliamentary service centre.

“I have evidence that these meetings took place, including minutes. Therefore, the claim that no meetings were held is untrue.

“We are continuing our efforts to address the concerns, including the illegal factory and demolition notices,” he added.

Zahir emphasised that as an MP, he is a facilitator, while enforcement responsibilities lie with DBKL.

Considering legal action

Zahir said he would seek legal advice to pursue further action on those who made comments against him on the matter.

“These accusations are completely unfounded and appear to be aimed at undermining my credibility as the MP for Wangsa Maju and tarnishing my reputation. This is an attempt to depict me as indifferent to the issues at hand.

“Based on my review, I found that one of the individuals who slandered me in the video also has a record of having been sued for defamation and subsequently issued an apology.

“I hope the police will investigate this matter thoroughly and take appropriate action,” he concluded.
