Large sinkhole appears in front of KLIA's Bunga Raya Complex

A big sinkhole has occurred in front of KLIA’s Bunga Raya Complex, which authorities suspect has been caused by leakage from a nearby sewage pipe.

In a statement, the Works Ministry said initial checks revealed the sinkhole at the airport terminal designated for VIPs was about 5m wide and around 1m in depth.

“The sinkhole was detected at a paved road between the entrance and exit for Bunga Raya Complex. The location is not within the service area of the Public Works Department and Roadcare.

“The road is still accessible to all vehicles. However, a traffic management plan has been set up at the sinkhole area.

“Checks at the site revealed that there is a KLIA sewage manhole near the sinkhole. It is suspected that a leakage on the sewage pipe has caused the sinkhole,” the ministry said on its official Facebook account.

The Works Ministry further said that it has informed Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB) of the incident and the company will issue a detailed report once its investigation is concluded.

“The Public Works Department and Roadcare are ready to assist if MAHB requires their expertise,” it added.

Last month, a female tourist, Vijayaletchumy, 48, fell into a sinkhole at Jalan Masjid India in Kuala Lumpur and disappeared.

The body of the tourist from Kuppam, Andhra Pradesh, India was never recovered despite extensive search and rescue efforts by authorities.

A second sinkhole was later detected some 50m away from the spot where Vijayaletchumy disappeared.
