The Selangor Royal Office has published Kedah Menteri Besar Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor’s letter of apology to the state’s ruler Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah on its Facebook page.

The royal office also stated that Sultan Sharafuddin had been “informed” about the letter but did not elaborate.

Sanusi’s apology yesterday came 14 months after a speech containing “disrespectful” remarks and a day before the case management of his related sedition charge.

The PAS leader, known for his colourful statements, began his four-paragraph letter by seeking forgiveness and noting that his speech in Selayang, Selangor, on July 11, 2023, was considered offensive and disrespectful to His Highness.

“I realise that my words have created a sense of uncomfortableness and hurt Your Highness’ feelings, and I am deeply regretful of the negative effects that arose from my statement.

“I wish to humbly inform Your Highness that I had no intention in my heart to belittle Your Highness whom I always respect and hold in high esteem.

“I have realised that when I am present in other states, especially in relation to this case where I was in Selangor, I should not utter uncultured, insulting, and inappropriate words as I did, even when the speech was made during the heat of the election campaign.

“Therefore, with deep remorse and humility, I sincerely seek the forgiveness of His Highness the Sultan of Selangor, the honourable Selangor menteri besar, and the people of Selangor for my indiscretion in words. I promise to be more cautious in making statements in the future and will ensure that every statement I make aligns with the respectful manners and culture of our Malay customs, which always uphold the Malay rulers and the royal institution,” he added.

On July 18 last year, Sanusi claimed trial to two charges at the Sessions Court in Selayang over his remarks during the state election.

According to the first charge, the menteri besar said the Kedah sultanate was the only one in the country with uninterrupted lineage and that the Kedah ruler would not have appointed Amirudin Shari as menteri besar to head the Selangor administration.

According to the second charge, Sanusi questioned if the Yang di-Pertuan Agong had indeed decreed that a unity government be formed after the parliamentary election last November.

The PAS election director previously issued an apology to the ruler in a statement on Facebook last July. However, at the time, he claimed his speech was “deliberately twisted” and “spun by agents of Pakatan Harapan/BN”.
