After Mahkota win, Zahid credits PM for moral support

Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi expressed his gratitude to Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim for the moral support provided during the Mahkota by-election, stating that BN’s victory reflected the public's acceptance of the government.

The deputy prime minister's remarks came after BN’s candidate Syed Hussien Syed Abdullah trounced his opponent with a majority of over 20,000 votes.

"Indeed, this victory comes with a heavy trust, a responsibility that cannot be ignored," he said in a statement today.

Zahid (above) also paid tribute to former Mahkota assemblyperson, the late Sharifah Azizah Syed Zain, emphasising her invaluable contributions to the constituency, while thanking voters and BN machinery for their efforts.

Syed Hussien garnered 27,795 votes against Perikatan Nasional's Mohamad Haizan Jaafar - who received 7,347 votes.

‘Youths prefer development over division’

Echoing his party president’s sentiments, Johor Umno chief Ahmad Jazlan Yaakub also praised the electorate, particularly young voters, for their confidence in BN and the Madani coalition.

He highlighted their focus on the nation's future development rather than being swayed by divisive political rhetoric and slander.

“This is a decision we deeply appreciate, as young voters have once again thrown their support behind the BN candidate, following our success in Nenggiri,” said Jazlan.

‘Testament to moderate politics’

Johor DAP vice-chairperson Sheikh Umar Bagharib Ali described the victory as a testament to the effectiveness of moderate political campaigns, emphasising its importance for future elections.

In a statement, Sheikh Umar underscored the broader implications of the win, describing Mahkota as a microcosm of Malaysia, with its diverse voter demographics serving as a crucial testing ground for the strategies that the Madani coalition should adopt moving forward.

"To me, what’s more important is that Mahkota will stand as a testimony of a successful campaign formula and moderate political approach for upcoming elections," said Sheikh Umar, while extending his appreciation to all parties involved in the campaign.

"The win here is a signal to ensure national stability and to bolster Malaysia in the days to come," he added.

Meanwhile, Amanah president Mohamad Sabu said the victory in Mahkota is a clear signal of public confidence in the federal administration.

"Today's victory is a clear signal that the people, particularly voters in Johor, have confidence in the capability of the federal government.

"Political stability, the right economic policies and efforts by the Madani government under the leadership of the prime minister, have been the basis of public confidence," he added.
