S'gor ruler orders panel formed to ensure rehab of kids rescued from GISBH

Selangor ruler Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah has ordered the formation of a committee to ensure children rescued from Global Ikhwan Services and Business Holdings (GISBH) are properly rehabilitated.

The committee, which will report directly to the sultan, should be responsible for reintegrating the children back into society after a set period of time once the rehabilitation is complete, said a statement from the Selangor Royal Office on Facebook.

“His Majesty wants this matter handled immediately and not delayed as it concerns the future of the children involved,” the statement said.

The order was made during a meeting Sultan Sharafuddin held with Selangor Islamic Affairs and Innovative Culture exco Mohammad Fahmi Ngah and Selangor Islamic Religious Council (Mais) member Salehuddin Saidin.

Yesterday, Selangor set up a task force to rehabilitate the children rescued from GISBH.

Fahmi (above, right) said the task force would comprise representatives from the police, the Social Welfare Department, the Selangor Education Department, the state zakat board, Mais, and the Selangor Islamic Religious Department (Jais).

Police raids

In early September, police launched Ops Global and raided charity homes across Peninsular Malaysia linked to GISBH, which were suspected of being involved in child and religious exploitation activities.

As a result, 572 victims were rescued while 359 followers of GISBH, including its senior management, were arrested.

The number of children rescued has since increased to 662.

Last week, Bernama reported that the Pahang Mufti Department, through the Pahang State Islamic Law Consultative Committee, declared that GISBH followers are heretical and deviant.

Pahang Mufti Asmadi Mohamed Naim said GISBH followers continue to uphold the beliefs and practices of Aurad Muhammadiah propagated by the al-Arqam group which was banned in 1994.

Group members believe that Ashaari, who passed away in 2010, did not die but ghaib (vanished).
