'Kurang ajar and cowardly', Amanah rep shells US embassy

An Amanah assemblyperson rained criticisms on the United States embassy in Kuala Lumpur for not accepting a protest memorandum on the situation in Gaza.

Abbas Salimi Azmi said the embassy’s officials should be mindful of where they are located.

“You are in Malaysia, but you are kurang ajar (insolent) for not accepting a memorandum from Malaysians,” said the Seri Serdang assemblyperson.

“This is what I want to stress, the insolence of the US embassy,” he told reporters after his statement was recorded at the Wangsa Maju district police headquarters today.

Abbas (above) also called the US embassy cowardly because its officials refused to come out to accept the memorandum.

“We just wanted to submit a memorandum, which is five or six pages, containing the voice of Malaysians on the cruelty perpetrated against our family in Palestine.

“But they did not allow us to enter. I personally saw an official. He noticed us but was too afraid to come out even when I asked him to do so in a polite manner,” he added.

Abbas was summoned by the police over the gathering which took place in front of the Lembaga Tabung Haji headquarters after Friday prayers last week.

Hundreds attended the gathering, which also saw Amanah president Mohamad Sabu and Pejuang president Mukhriz Mahathir in attendance.

Mukhriz, who is the son of former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad, was called in for questioning following the gathering as well.

The next day, thousands marched through the city to show their solidarity with Palestinians.

Mobilised by the PAS women’s wing and supported by several other groups, they rallied in front of the Kuala Lumpur City Centre (KLCC) Twin Towers mosque before walking towards the US Embassy, about 2km away along Jalan Tun Razak.
