Kindy kids forced to stand on tables as floods ravage Klang Valley

Heavy rain since early this morning has caused flash floods in several areas around the Klang Valley, including the capital and Selangor.

Several landslides have also been reported.

In Ukay Perdana, Hulu Klang, the Selangor Fire and Rescue Department reported that the flood was caused by a nearby river overflowing, with water entering the residential area and stranding 10 vehicles.

The flash flood did not severely affect residents, and the water level was estimated at 0.3m.

The department said rainwater pooling in the parking area caused the flood in Ukay Bistari, Hulu Klang, but no victims were affected.

Separately, a user on X posted about a landslide in Taman Melawati, which is feared to affect nearby residential areas.

Additionally, the Malaysian Highway Authority reported flash floods at the Damansara-Puchong Expressway at 9.44am, though the situation returned to normal shortly afterwards.

Earlier, Malaysiakini reported that the Dewan Rakyat session started late today as many MPs were delayed due to flash floods in Kuala Lumpur.

The Parliament sitting, scheduled to start at 10am with the Prime Minister’s Question Time, was postponed to 10.30am, according to speaker Johari Abdul.

In another development, Facebook user Aji Yusop reported that a Kemas preschool in Kampung Klang Gate, Gombak, was inundated. He posted a video showing students climbing onto tables to avoid being submerged.

“Oh God, please help those near the Sekolah Tabika Kemas in Kampung Klang Gate, Gombak. The teachers and children are trapped.

“Immediate assistance is needed. May the children and teachers remain safe, and may everything go smoothly,” he wrote.

The Fire and Rescue Department later provided an update that all 21 of the preschool’s pupils were successfully rescued.

“The flood operation reported water levels reaching waist height, affecting four houses and one Kemas preschool.

“The department instructed the residents to move to the village’s hall and evacuated 21 Kemas preschool children to a safe location. The water level is receding,” it said.

Severe traffic disruption

Closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage from the Integrated Transport Information System (Itis) of Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) and social media posts showed several flooded roads around Kuala Lumpur.

This caused severe traffic disruptions this morning, including on Jalan Parlimen towards Bukit Aman, Jalan Perak, and the Sultan Iskandar Highway.

Bernama also reported that its survey found that the access road to Wisma Bernama from Jalan Tun Razak was flooded, and the safety alarm at Sungai Bunus indicated a dangerous water level.

Smart Expressway’s X account announced that the Smart Tunnel was fully closed to users due to ongoing flood operations.

“Road users are advised to drive carefully. Please plan your journey and follow traffic instructions,” the post stated.

Kelana Jaya LRT line affected

Repair works are being carried out following a service disruption on the Kelana Jaya LRT line, involving the track between the Wangsa Maju and Sri Rampai stations, caused by an unusual flow of rainwater that damaged several track components, said Rapid Rail Sdn Bhd.

According to Bernama, Rapid Rail, operator of the Rapid KL rail service, in a statement said the incident which occurred at 10.20am, forced the operation to stop the power supply in the area involved to allow inspection and repair work to be carried out.

In the interim, a feeder service has been activated between the Gombak and Wangsa Maju stations. Trains approaching from Putra Heights will turn back at Wangsa Maju station.

To ensure that passengers can continue their journey, 12 free feeder buses will operate at a frequency of 15 minutes.

“We hope repair works can be completed before the evening peak hour,” it said.
