Parliament meet delayed as MPs show up late for work due to floods

Today’s Dewan Rakyat meeting was postponed as lawmakers joined the masses in being late for work due to flash flooding in Kuala Lumpur.

The meeting was supposed to start at 10am with Prime Minister’s Question Time, although neither Anwar Ibrahim nor Amirudin Shari (Harapan-Gombak), who was slated to ask the first question, appeared to be in the house chambers.

Speaker Johari Abdul then informed the house that he was postponing the session to 10.30am.

“It’s raining heavily out there, and there is flooding. Many MPs are stuck in those floods,” he said.

The flash flooding occurred following a downpour that hit parts of the Klang Valley earlier this morning.

It caused the already heavy traffic on major roads leading into Kuala Lumpur to worsen, with some hitting a standstill.

According to a short video shared in Kuala Lumpur Fire and Rescue Department’s official Whatsapp group for media, among the roads that were badly hit by flash floods was the stretch between the Parliament front entrance and Bukit Aman federal police headquarters at Jalan Parlimen.

At Jalan Tuanku Halim, several vehicles bearing the MP emblem escorted by police were seen trying to squeeze through heavy traffic just minutes before the Dewan Rakyat was scheduled to begin.
