Using AI to make decisions can curb corruption, says law minister

PARLIAMENT | Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Law and Institutional Reform) Azalina Othman Said said adopting artificial intelligence (AI) can help curb corruption.

She said the core issue is individuals behind the scenes who make decisions, based on their own discretion, who may be susceptible to bribery.

Hence, using AI technology to make decisions would remove that variable, she said.

“Everyone knows that when we talk about the MACC, for example, with the introduction of AI today, like it or not, corruption can be reduced.

“That’s why this technology is the way forward, so that reforms in the legal institutions, along with the existing technological systems, can bring about changes that will result in fewer discretionary decisions encouraging corruption,” she said.

Azalina (BN-Pengerang) was speaking during today’s Dewan Rakyat session in response to a supplementary question from Aminolhuda Hassan (Pakatan Harapan-Sri Gading).

In addition to his question, Aminolhuda asked for clarification on the government’s plans to expand institutional reforms, particularly in the judiciary and law enforcement.

Azalina said reform not only involves amending existing laws but also ensuring they are enforced effectively.

“That’s why, in my view, we must recognise that laws alone don’t solve all problems. However, the laws we have and our institutions must evolve with the times,” she added.
