Impact of AI: MP urges govt to retain 'human touch' in official graphics

PARLIAMENT | With rapid developments surrounding the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI), including as part of cost-cutting measures, a backbencher debating the Supply Bill 2025 today said the government should retain a "human touch" to produce official graphics.

Syahredzan Johan (Harapan-Bangi) said the use of AI, while important, should also consider factors such as existing legislation, moral considerations as well as the impact on the workforce.

"These days, anyone can generate an image using AI. AI can be radio announcers or news presenters.

"So what is the impact of AI on (human) graphic designers, radio announcers, newscasters and maybe one day, lawyers like me?" he said in the Dewan Rakyat today.

Syahredzan said the government should keep up with the rapid developments surrounding AI and respond with corresponding measures.

"One more thing, I hope the government will not be too overzealous in using AI-generated images for official graphics.

"The government should continue to give opportunities to artists and graphic designers. There is still value in us highlighting the human touch in graphic design," he said.

'Local game development'

In a related matter, Syahredzan said more government support is needed in the local game development, specifically to market the final products abroad.

Describing himself as a console gamer, Syahredzan cited locally developed titles, such as Gigabash and No Straight Roads, for Sony PlayStation.

"Complete development (of a game) is not the real endgame, but the developed titles must be marketed and generate demand.

"Here, the government can play a role in establishing games developed locally as a showcase of homegrown talents," he said.
