The family of S Vinosiny and Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) will go through mediation next year to try to reach a settlement in a negligence suit over her death via electrocution in her dorm room.
The family’s counsel, M Manoharan, this afternoon revealed that the matter is set to be heard by a mediator on March 23 next year.
“The status of the mediation would be informed (to the Alor Setar High Court) on April 16, 2025,” the lawyer told Malaysiakini.
Manoharan added that the civil court will conduct a full hearing of the lawsuit for three days starting Nov 10 next year in the event that a settlement was not reached via the mediation effort.
In May 2022, it was reported that Vinosiny, who was enrolled at UUM in Sintok, Kedah, was suspected of having died from an electric shock in her hostel room.
The deceased, who was in the fourth semester of her accounting and information system studies, had returned to campus a week before the tragedy.
Last year, the Alor Setar Coroner’s Court ruled that the student died of electrocution.
In February this year, the deceased’s father, R Sivakumar, filed the civil action against UUM over alleged negligence, seeking RM3.05 million in damages.
