No plans to reintroduce UPSR, PT3, despite Zahid's wish

The Education Ministry has no plans to revive the UPSR and PT3 exams for Standard 6 and Form 3 students, respectively, or centralised testing.

This was despite Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi raising the need to revamp the national education policy, including the lack of such exams for Standard 6 and Form 3 students.

In a written parliamentary reply dated Monday, Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek said that school-based assessments remained the best option for students.

"For now, the Education Ministry maintains its decision not to reintroduce UPSR and PT3 or to reintroduce centralised testing.

"School based assessments that are holistic and continuous are the best approach to optimise student potential in a thorough and integrated way as is desired in the National Education Philosophy," she said.

She was responding to a query from Shamsulkahar Mohd Deli (BN-Jempol) on the matter.

On Sept 15, Zahid said the lack of UPSR and PT3 exams needed to be revamped due to the high incidence of Form 5 students skipping the SPM exam, and students having problems with reading, writing, and arithmetic.

Both UPSR and PT3 were abolished in 2022 and replaced with classroom assessments and school-based assessments.
