Shafee: I didn't win a shred of cotton, hearsay evidence accepted

Muhammad Shafee Abdullah considers the 1MDB case the first black mark on his sterling legal career.

Although stating that he and his client, former premier Najib Abdul Razak, accept and respect the judgment, the lawyer however was nonplussed.

“I am just so surprised that this is probably the only case I have ever had where, at this stage, I didn’t even win on a single point.

“Forget about the cloth, not even a shred of cotton I won in this particular holding,” he told reporters at the Kuala Lumpur Court Complex.

Shafee (above) also described it as a “rare if not the only case” in which “hearsay evidence” was accepted.

“Everything that was said was taken wholesale,” he said.

Defence to fight on

Despite the setback, Shafee vowed he would not relent and continue pursuing justice for his client.

“But we are not giving up. We are going to fight this case and we are more determined because of the decision today,” he stressed.

Earlier, the Kuala Lumpur High Court ordered the former premier to enter his defence over four abuse of power charges and 21 money laundering counts involving RM2.27 billion of funds from 1MDB.

Shafee said that Najib and his defence team were "extremely disappointed" with the judgment, saying that "we have put up arguments that we thought would at minimum require serious consideration".
