'Big relief', says Yeoh after diver's CT scan normal

Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh is relieved that national diver Ooi Tze Liang did not suffer serious injuries from hitting the springboard during his second dive at the final of the Malaysian Open at the National Aquatic Centre in Bukit Jalil yesterday.

“I’ve messaged him and he’s okay and could WhatsApp me. He is being checked by the doctor and he says not to worry, and the CT scan is normal.

“That’s a big relief, I saw the video and how they rushed to give him instant aid.

“The National Sports Institute was the first to highlight this to me so I’ve told the CEO to see what kind of rehab we can do for him,” Yeoh (above) was quoted as saying by Bernama.

At the time of the incident, Ooi, 30, was competing with his national teammate, Muhammad Syafiq Puteh as well as divers from Japan, New Zealand, Indonesia, Taiwan, and Singapore, and thus was unable to finish the event.

Earlier, the Malaysian Swimming Federation secretary-general Andy Low said his side was waiting for the latest information from the officer monitoring Ooi’s injury.

“He was performing a new dive, the typical one when the incident happened,” Low said.

“From our observation, he appeared to be a bit off-balance, and when that happened, he could not control himself and ended up hitting the board.

“He has been taken to the emergency unit at Columbia Asia Hospital,” he added.
