The police have opened an investigation paper into a video featuring a man allegedly making disparaging remarks against Islam and Muslims.

In a statement today, Kuala Lumpur police chief Rusdi Mohd Isa said the video, which runs slightly over four minutes, was uploaded on Facebook by the account Tan Speakers Corner (Tan Chong Ren).

“We have opened an investigation paper under Section 298A of the Penal Code, Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act, and Section 14 of the Minor Offences Act 1955.

“We have identified the suspect and will be taking his statement soon. He is currently receiving treatment for mental health issues at a hospital.

“The police take this matter seriously and would not hesitate to take stern legal action against anyone who jeopardises public order and national security,” he added.

In the video, Tan started by saying that he wished to respond to an unspecified comment made by former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad on YouTube.

He was then seen shouting profanities against Islam and Muslims while challenging Mahathir to a fight.
