Don't waste time like Democrats courting Republicans, Hassan tells Harapan

The Democratic party’s loss in the 2024 US presidential election should be a lesson for Pakatan Harapan against pandering to the ultra-Malays, said Pasir Gudang MP Hassan Abdul Karim.

He said the ruling party has to be realistic and focus on establishing a united Bangsa Malaysia instead of trying to upstage Malay parties like PAS, Umno and Bersatu.

“Harapan must be realistic and aware that no matter how hard it tries, it can never outdo PAS, Umno and Bersatu, which are Malay-based parties by design.

“Harapan has to focus on all races, both Malays and non-Malays, bumiputera and non-bumiputera, not only in the peninsula but also in Sabah and Sarawak.

“It has to be an inclusive coalition, not exclusive. This has always been the strength of Harapan which consists of members from all backgrounds - Muslims, non-Muslims, Malays and non-Malays, bumi and non-bumi from all over the country,” he said.

According to Hassan (above), who is a PKR lawmaker, Harapan should work on building a united democratic community rather than trying to be pro-Malay, which he said is something they will surely fail at.

Focus on economic agenda

He said the coalition can win support by focusing on its economic agenda for the country and improving the cost of living. It should, at the same time, work hard towards ensuring good governance, fighting against corruption, and addressing issues facing the rakyat.

“Do not waste time like what the Democrats did in the US, where they failed despite efforts to woo Republican supporters.

“In Malaysia, Harapan should focus on strengthening its core support group by implementing policies and an economic system that promises fair distribution, with appropriate salary scale and on the right track towards our target to make Malaysia a high-income developed nation,” he said.
