Kit Siang should ask why US rejected Kamala - Puad

The outcome of yesterday’s US presidential election sent Umno leader Mohd Puad Zarkashi admonishing Lim Kit Siang over the latter’s “non-Malay PM” remark, which the former DAP leader made last year.

The Umno supreme council member pointed to the majority of US states throwing their support behind Trump over the Democrats’ Kamala Harris, who is a Black woman with Asian American identity.

“A woman still fails to get elected as a US president even after 248 years of the country’s independence. According to history, the US gained independence on July 4, 1776.

“So, was this a case of racism and gender discrimination? First, she is a woman and second, of Indian-Jamaican descent. Lim, please answer this.

“When (Barack) Obama won the US presidency, Lim had asked when a Chinese person could become a PM in Malaysia. Now he should ask why Kamala was rejected. Was it because her mother came from India and Asia?” Puad (above) said in a statement posted on Facebook this morning.

The presidential election results showed Trump, a Republican, won 277 electoral votes to win over Harris’ 224.

He also won key swing states, including North Carolina, Georgia, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin, as well as other states such as Indiana, Kentucky, West Virginia, Florida, Tennessee, South Carolina, Oklahoma, Mississippi, Alabama, Arkansas, North Dakota, South Dakota, Wyoming, Nebraska, Louisiana, Ohio, Texas, Missouri, Utah, Montana, Kansas, Iowa, and Idaho.

Last year, Lim created a controversy after he spoke about the possibility of a non-Malay becoming a prime minister in Malaysia.

The former DAP chairperson made the remark when commenting on how Obama, who is African-American, could become the president of the United States after more than 230 years of the founding of the country.

Adding further, Puad regarded Lim’s statement as “immature” for raising something that “cannot be forced”.

“Why did Lim only compare Obama in the US with Malaysia? He should have compared the US with Indonesia, Pakistan and India where women have become presidents in those countries.

“That is why race and gender only become an issue when discrimination exists. It depends on the acceptance of the people of the country. Like the cooperation between Umno and DAP today.”
