Saifuddin defends use of Sosma against GISBH leaders

PARLIAMENT | Home Minister Saifuddin Nasution Ismail defended the police’s decision to invoke the Security Offences (Special Measures) Act 2012 (Sosma) to detain several leaders from Global Ikhwan Services and Business Holdings (GISBH).

The minister said the decision was justified as the investigation was carried out under Section 130B(1) of the Penal Code, which covers organised crime.

“The first element here involves more than two persons. Secondly, they had an objective (exploiting children) and thirdly, it also involved material gains.

“Based on these considerations, we can interpret the movement activities as an organised crime,” he said during his winding-up speech in the Dewan Rakyat today.

Saifuddin (above) was responding to a question from Jalaluddin Alias (BN-Jelebu), RSN Rayer (Harapan-Jelutong), Takiyuddin Hassan (PN-Kota Bharu), William Leong (Harapan-Selayang) dan Andi Muhammad Suryady Bandy (BN-Kalabakan).

On Oct 23, GISBH CEO Nasiruddin Mohd Ali, his wife Azura Md Yusof and 20 other group members - 12 men and eight women - were charged with being members of an organised crime group under Section 130V(1) of the Penal Code.

No plea was recorded from them, as the case, which is under Sosma, falls within the jurisdiction of the High Court.
