Victim of alleged royalty-linked assault thanks Tengku Hassanal

A former construction worker allegedly attacked by a group that included a member of Pahang royalty expressed his gratitude to Pahang Crown Prince Tengku Hassanal Ibrahim Alam Shah.

Alias Awang, 44, said Tengku Hassanal’s concern over his case enabled his alleged attackers to be charged.

“I wish to thank the Pahang crown prince for helping bring justice to me.

“However, given that this case is now already in court, let the laws decide,” he was quoted as saying by Berita Harian.

The attack on Alias (above, left) was first highlighted by Malaysiakini on Sept 5 and had previously caught the attention of Tengku Hassanal, who called for the father of eight to be given justice.

Yesterday at the Kuantan Magistrate Court, a nephew of the Pahang sultan and a police officer were among five charged with assaulting Alias.

Tengku Eddie Akasya Tengku Abd Rahman, 20; Nik Norisham Affendi NiK Mohd Zani, 39; Mohd Fouzi Md Nur, 44; Mohd Taufik Daud, 32; and Khairul Azhar Rosli, 38, were accused of intentionally injuring Alias on his right thigh with a knife.

Bernama identified Fouzi as a police officer.

They were charged under Sections 324 and 34 of the Penal Code with possible punishments of jail for up to two years, fines, and caning.

According to media reports, all five pleaded not guilty and requested to be tried.

According to the charge sheet, the incident occurred on June 6 in the area of a horse barn lot on Jalan Teluk Sisek in Kuantan.

Tengku Eddie’s name was previously not released publicly as he had yet to be charged in court.

On Sept 5, Tengku Hassanal urged the police to take action against the state royal accused of attacking a member of the public.

“I want firm police action and a proper fair investigation, without compromise.

“No one is above the law, even ‘royalty’,” he said in an Instagram story.

In a statement later, Tengku Hassanal stressed that he would not protect anyone, including members of the royal family, who engaged in unlawful actions.
