Probe whistleblower claims regardless who is involved - PKR Youth

PKR Youth has called on the MACC to probe the revelation of a whistleblower allegedly possessing video evidence of a major corruption scandal, regardless of who is involved.

Wing chief Adam Adli Abdul Halim said there should be no protection for any act of corruption.

“We place our trust in the authorities, especially the MACC, to take the necessary action including to fairly investigate and initiate prosecution over these allegations that have surfaced regardless of who is involved,” he said in a statement today.

Adam (above) added that corruption is a major obstacle in efforts to rebuild the country within the Madani framework.

Yesterday, Malaysiakini revealed that it sighted eight videos, each featuring a different assemblyperson who purportedly received hundreds of thousands of ringgit to support a company’s bid for a project in their state.

The discussions in the video involved a businessperson, whose face was not visible, requesting the politicians, including those holding senior positions, to return the money since the licence for the project had been rescinded.

Malaysiakini is withholding the identities of the politicians at the request of the whistleblower.

Earlier today, Malaysiakini reported that the whistleblower is afraid of reprisal and is seeking a guarantee of protection even before lodging an MACC report.

MACC chief Azam Baki yesterday confirmed that the whistleblower’s lawyers had played a snippet of the video’s audio during a meeting with him.

However, he did not guarantee whistleblower protection, saying a formal report should be lodged beforehand.

No reason why complainant cannot be protected

Commenting on this, Bukit Gelugor MP Ramkarpal Singh said that there was no reason for the MACC not to provide whistleblower protection.

“At first glance, the videos of the purported assemblypersons seem genuine and, as such, the whistleblower’s complaints do not appear frivolous. 

“Given the above, there appears to be no reason for the MACC to exercise its discretion in revoking the immunity of the whistleblower, which would enable an effective investigation into the matter,” he said in a separate statement today.

He added that if the MACC does not grant protection to the whistleblower, it may give the impression that the graft busters are unable to combat corruption due to various inadequacies in the law.
