Graft exposés: No need for PM to cut short overseas trip, Fahmi says

There is no need for Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim to cut short his overseas trip as he could address domestic issues from anywhere, government spokesperson Fahmi Fadzil said.

He said this in response to questions from the press about whether Anwar should return home to address alleged corruption involving Sabah politicians

“The prime minister will return to Malaysia, Insya-Allah, next Wednesday and in this day and age, he can respond to issues from anywhere he is.

“So, I don’t see it as an issue and Anwar had already mentioned that blanket protection (to the whistleblower) is impossible as it must go through existing laws.

“And we urge the whistleblower to lodge a report with the MACC,” Fahmi said during his weekly press conference today.

Anwar began his inaugural official trip to South America last Wednesday.

The first finance minister is also attending the 31st Apec Economic Leaders’ Meeting, which began yesterday and will conclude tomorrow.

Since Nov 9, Malaysiakini has been publishing damning clips from a whistleblower - allegedly showing Sabah politicians engaging in corrupt acts.

The whistleblower had appealed to the MACC for immunity from prosecution before handing over evidence to the authorities for further action.

However, MACC chief commissioner Azam Baki said he could not provide a written guarantee on the matter, which Anwar affirmed.
