PN to campaign on MA63 in Sabah polls - Muhyiddin

Perikatan Nasional will campaign on the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63) in the upcoming Sabah state election next year, coalition chairperson Muhyiddin Yassin said today.

He said he agreed to a request from Bersatu vice-president Ronald Kiandee, who asked for the party to include the issue in its election manifesto.

Ronald represents the Beluran parliamentary constituency in Sabah.

“He (Ronald) said, this is what is contained in the MA63 and Federal Constitution. It must be included in our manifesto during the Sabah state election, which will be held soon.

“I answered ‘Yes, we will include it’,” Muhyiddin said, adding that it will be one of the core points in the coalition’s manifesto.

He was speaking at the closing ceremony of the Bersatu annual general assembly.

The Sabah election must be held by December 2025.

The MA63 legal document was created upon Sabah and Sarawak’s agreement to join Malaya and Singapore in forming Malaysia.

In September, Deputy Prime Minister Fadillah Yusof said 11 demands under MA63 have been resolved.

This included the designation of the Public Works Department (PWD) in Sabah and Sarawak as a Technical Department; the handover of regulatory power over gas supply; and amendments to the Inland Revenue Board (IRB) Act 1995 (Act 533) to appoint representatives from the Sabah and Sarawak governments as permanent members of the IRB.

Return 40pct revenue

In Ronald’s closing speech at the Bersatu assembly, he called for the federal government to return 40 percent of Sabah’s revenue to the state.

He said this could be done through Article 112C of the Federal Constitution, which provides special grants and revenue for the states of Sabah and Sarawak.

Promising to implement this would set Bersatu apart from other parties, he added.
