Why the silence on mining scandal, Warisan leader asks DAP

Warisan supreme council member Calvin Chong has questioned DAP’s silence over the alleged corruption scandal in Sabah.

The Elopura assemblyperson noted that before the videos were released, DAP lawmaker Lim Lip Eng had offered to raise the matter in Parliament.

On Nov 11, after the MACC said it could not guarantee the whistleblower protection from legal repercussions, Lim urged the businessperson to reach out to him before the Dewan Rakyat proceedings end in mid-December.

“I am prepared to present the evidence and disclose the names of those involved in Parliament, pressing for the authorities to take swift and decisive action against them,” the Kepong MP had said.

Chong found it regrettable that after Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim stated that no protection would be granted to the whistleblower and that he would be investigated, no DAP MP dared to voice this issue.

“Over 55 years, DAP has always championed clean governance and monitoring the checks and balances of the government for votes.

“Hence, this is a hypocritical party that says one thing before the election and does another thing when in the government.

“Remember DAP was voted in because voters believed in the party’s principles, but now, it is the total opposite when they are the government,” he said in a statement this evening.

‘Tip of the iceberg’

Describing the videos on the scandal as possibly the “tip of the iceberg”, Chong urged MACC to investigate the matter thoroughly.

The Warisan leader also appealed to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar to order MACC to execute its duties without fear or favour.

On Nov 21, Anwar vowed that there would be no cover-up over the scandal following speculation that his administration considered the Chief Minister Hajiji Noor-led Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) state government as a valuable political asset.

Hajiji had claimed that the videos were “maliciously edited” and denied the corruption allegations as unfounded.

The whistleblower claimed that the videos contained discussions with assemblypersons on the alleged bribe he gave them to support his application for mineral exploration licences.
