Appointing Dusuki as AG the 'best decision', says Kulasegaran

PARLIAMENT | The government has defended its decision to appoint Mohd Dusuki Mokhtar as the attorney-general (AG), with a deputy minister claiming that it was the "best decision".

Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Law and Institutional Reform) M Kulasegaran said Dusuki was chosen based on his seniority, and reputation as a lawyer.

"The decision that the government made was the best decision, because of his (Dusuki) seniority. He is also experienced and known as a capable lawyer.

"I can attest to this because I had personally argued against him in a number of cases in court. He is above all these. There is freedom and integrity in the matter (Dusuki's appointment)," Kulasegaran (above) said during an oral question-and-answer session at the Dewan Rakyat this morning.

The deputy minister was responding to a supplementary question from Abd Ghani Ahmad (PN-Jerlun), who raised an issue with Putrajaya choosing Dusuki to take over as AG from Ahmad Terrirudin Mohd Salleh, who was recently appointed as a Federal Court judge.

Dusuki involved in Zahid’s DNAA

Abd Ghani questioned the decision, especially given Dusuki's role in seeking a discharge not amounting to an acquittal (DNAA) in Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi's corruption case.

To this, Kulasegaran said that Dusuki was not the only lawyer who was in charge of Zahid's corruption trial.

He, however, agreed with Abd Ghani over the latter's suggestion that future AG appointments should go through a parliamentary special select committee.

"It is a good suggestion, and should be looked into by the government before a decision is made," Kulasegaran added.
