MACC questions 15, including whistleblower over Sabah graft claims

The MACC has questioned 15 individuals in regard to the alleged Sabah corruption scandal, including the whistleblower.

MACC chief commissioner Azam Baki stated that they started recording the whistleblower’s statement on Saturday and would have finished today.

“I would like to stress here that some have claimed we never took action but we did.

“There was a report against the so-called whistleblower who is allegedly in cahoots with one officer from Sabah over mineral exploration,” he told reporters after attending the International Anti-Corruption Day today.

On Dec 3, the whistleblower released the full video recordings implicating several assemblypersons.

The whistleblower claimed the videos document discussions about returning alleged bribes given to the politicians to secure support for a mining exploration licence application.

A day later, Sabah Chief Minister Hajiji Noor dismissed the corruption allegations as attempts to destabilise the state government and tarnish its reputation.

Whistleblower not giving proof

Elaborating, Azam said the MACC is investigating two cases regarding the matter.

The first case involves the whistleblower and a Sabah officer, adding the agency has recorded the duo's statements.

“As for the second case, so far we have recorded 15 statements including the eight adun (assemblypersons),” he added.

Azam mentioned that until now, the whistleblower had refused to hand over the evidence he has as he is still seeking some kind of protection or immunity from the MACC.

“That one I stress here again, we can’t give him any protection as long as he doesn’t divulge what he has.

“So, I can’t comment so much. This is his decision because he came to the office together with his lawyer and was advised by his lawyer.

“That’s what I can say for now and the investigation will continue,” he added.

Pressed on the immunity request, Azam said: “I can’t assure protection until he gives us all (evidence).

“What happened now, he gave to you all (media), not to MACC.”

‘Prioritise case’ - Sabah DAP

In a statement later, Sabah DAP urged the MACC to prioritise the case and ensure it is handled with transparency and integrity.

“Sabah DAP fully supports the MACC in conducting a thorough and impartial investigation,” said the state chapter’s secretary Vivian Wong.

She also welcomed Hajiji’s assurance that no licences have been issued to exploit the state’s mineral resources.

“We acknowledge and appreciate the decisive actions taken by Hajiji in ensuring that no mining licenses are issued. It is a relief that an extraordinary amount of natural resources has been secured for Sabah’s benefit.

“However, our stance remains firm: DAP being part of the government opposes corruption in any form and believes in justice and fair investigation.”
