A Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) lecturer being sued by Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh for defamation is whipping up public support for his defence.
Yeoh’s case against Kamarul Zaman Yusoff is over similar allegations made by former inspector-general of police (IGP) Musa Hassan accusing the DAP politician of Christian evangelism and trying to convert Muslims.
In a Facebook post today, Kamarul (above, left) said he was happy that the High Court had sided with Musa in dismissing Yeoh’s case, and expressed optimism that he too was in the right.
“Pray for my victory in this case,” he said.
In both suits against Musa and Kamarul, excerpts from Yeoh’s autobiography “Becoming Hannah” - in which she discussed the influence of her Christian faith on her life and political journey - were a source of the claims of evangelism targeted at Muslims.
The judge presiding over the DAP leader’s suit against Musa ruled that the former IGP had reasonable grounds for his allegations based on Yeoh’s affidavit and the book.
Kamarul - who had testified in Musa’s defence - is relying on the same grounds of defence.
Yeoh has repeatedly denied that she wanted to turn Malaysia into a Christian nation or wanted to convert Muslims.
The trial of her case against UUM lecturer is set to continue on Jan 14, 16, and 17.
In a separate statement today, PAS Youth chief Afnan Hamimi Taib Azamudden also called on Muslims to show solidarity with Kamarul.
