PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang has weighed in on the royal addendum controversy, and as expected, DAP emerged as his primary target.

He accused the “DAP-dominated” government of committing “treason” (derhaka) and betraying the concept of a constitutional monarchy.

“This has exposed the true nature of the Pakatan Harapan government, dominated by DAP, which upholds the principles of secularism embedded in the party’s constitution and the statements of its leaders.

“What is happening now is a continuation of the colonial-era approach,” he added in a statement.

Hadi was referring to the Court of Appeal’s decision allowing Najib Abdul Razak’s appeal to initiate a judicial review compelling the home minister and the government to enforce an alleged decree by the previous Yang di-Pertuan Agong, which could allow the former premier to serve his prison sentence under house arrest.

True ‘treasonous face’

The PAS leader said that Harapan came to power with the slogan that the Agong wanted a coalition government but later used the palace as an excuse to oppose criticisms and remarks from the opposition.

“The obvious mistake now is the action of ‘membakul sampahkan’ (binning) the letter by the king, thus exposing their treasonous face (wajah derhaka).

“This is the true face of the Harapan government, which is secular in nature and principles, focused solely on materialism, in line with its open membership, consisting of both the good and the bad, the right and the misguided, the religious and the non-religious.

“This includes those who lack ethics, who can be exploited for material interests, which is their main focus,” he charged.

Unlike Islam which grants powers to the rulers, Hadi claimed that the Madani government only uses the Malay rulers as political shields when it benefits them.

Selective handling

The PAS president also accused the Harapan government of being selective in handling cases related to political leaders, claiming that certain cases are either covered up or only partially addressed.

“Wrongdoings greater than the 1MDB scandal are swept under the carpet,” he said.

Hadi also emphasised the need to defend the institution of the monarchy and the judicial system based on Islam, stating that the religion encourages forgiveness, not oppression.

“The concept of Islamic justice seeks lighter punishment and opportunities for forgiveness as it aims to educate society,” he added.

In this regard, Hadi called on the people, especially Muslims, to evaluate the political coalition accused of betraying the institution of the Malay rulers and sidelining Islamic teachings.

With the opposition seeking to create a wedge over the addendum, PKR Youth called on BN to stand firm against political sentiments stirred up by their rivals.

Home Minister Saifuddin Nasution Ismail clarified yesterday that the Prison Department had not received any directive from the Pardons Board to allow Najib house arrest.

He stated that the previous Agong, Sultan Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah, had only instructed the reduction of Najib’s prison sentence to Aug 23, 2028, and the reduction of his fine to RM50 million.
