A cosplayer has lodged a police report after finding doctored photos of herself being sold online by an unscrupulous netizen, whom she believed had used artificial intelligence to make it seem that she was naked.
The victim, who goes by the nickname Elyanasparks, said on X that the edited photos were being sold for RM18 via the Tumblr app.
The seller also uploaded a banking QR code to receive payment, which the victim had provided to the police to help catch the perpetrator.
Following this, the Petaling Jaya district police launched an investigation under Section 292 of the Penal Code, which stipulates offences concerning the distribution of obscene materials.
"Police received a report on Jan 20 from a woman who said her photos were edited to make her appear nude and that the photos were uploaded onto Tumblr where they were sold for RM18 a piece.
"Police urge anyone with information regarding this case to contact our operations room," said Petaling Jaya district police chief Shahrulnizam Ja'afar in a statement today.
Not the only victim
In her posts about the case, the victim said she lodged a police report to get justice and to spread awareness about such activities.
Elyanasparks claimed that she was not the only one who had fallen victim to the culprit as there were also photos of other women, including minors and those wearing the headscarf.
"Yes, I’m aware that I’m a cosplayer and this is something that I have to face regularly. However, it is wrong in law to sell naked photos.
"Also, I really hate when people accuse me of selling such photos, because I am only a cosplayer who just likes to be herself and I'm against myself doing nsfw (not safe for work content), I have my limits," she added.
