Police have launched an investigation against a rally in front of the Sungai Buloh Prison Complex yesterday that, among others, called for the abolishment of the Security Offences (Special Measures) Act (Sosma) 2012.
Sungai Buloh district police chief Hafiz Muhammad Nor said the rally started at around 8.10am on Feb 8 and participants include family members of 32 Sosma detainees suspected of gang-related crimes.
“There were around 40 to 50 people on the ground including boys and girls who were all holding placards,” said Hafiz.
Police are investigating the case under Section 9(5) of the Peaceful Assembly Act 2012.
“We are identifying those involved and will call them up to record their statements,” he added.

Hunger strike
Yesterday, Malaysiakini reported that family members of 32 men being held under Sosma launched a hunger strike in front of the Sungai Buloh Prisons Complex.
Their demands include for the government and prison authorities to allow them to visit and check on the detainees, who were said to have also started a hunger strike inside the prison.
Suaram programme manager Azura Nasron, who was accompanying the family members, reiterated the group’s call for the abolishment of Sosma, which they said is violating the detainees’ human rights.
