Kedah Pakatan Harapan and BN are preparing themselves as the “government-in-waiting” for the next state polls.

Kedah Harapan chairperson Saifuddin Nasution Ismail today said the former rivals are working together to gain the support of voters in the state.

"In a recent meeting, we took the opportunity to discuss how we in Kedah can position ourselves as a credible and effective opposition... at the same time preparing to be a ‘government-in-waiting’, Sinar Harian quoted him as saying after a visit to the Sungai Petani Prison.

Saifuddin earlier confirmed that he was appointed to lead Harapan in the state as a replacement for Mahfuz Omar, who held the role since 2022.

When questioned on rumours that his appointment precedes him contesting a Kedah state seat, Saifuddin said he preferred to focus on leading the party, as the state election was still a way off.

PN-led state

Kedah is under the administration of the opposition coalition Perikatan Naisonal, which won 33 out of 36 seats in the last state election in 2023.

PN components PAS won 21 seats, Bersatu has 11 and Gerakan gained one spot. Harapan parties PKR and DAP captured the remaining three seats.

Saifuddin said that Kedah Harapan and BN will be holding a Unity Government Convention this Saturday in Sungai Petani, Berita Harian reported.

About 1,000 members from both coalitions are expected to be in attendance, he added.
