Mimifly's 'Serumpun' music video un-Islamic: Amanah Women leader

An Amanah women’s wing leader has condemned the music video of local pop singer Mimifly’s Aidilfitri song “Serumpun” for being un-Islamic.

Federal Territories Amanah Women chief Rafiza Askolani called on the Islamic Development Department (Jakim) and Communications Ministry to meet Mimifly and her production team to reprimand them.

“Federal Territories Amanah women’s wing also suggests that the music video be taken down from social media because it is clearly insulting and misleading to the community. 

“Although the singer has already made an apology, the music video remains on social media platforms and it will give the wrong impression about the sanctity of Islam and the celebration of Aidilfitri,” she added.

The title “Serumpun” refers to a Malay and Indonesian saying which means “of the same root”, alluding to the two cultures' shared roots.

Mimifly, a 38-year-old whose name is Shamimi Amalina Norisham, uploaded the two-minute and 53-second video on YouTube on March 14.

Earlier today, Harian Metro reported that the singer had apologised for her video.

Rafiza also commented on Mimifly’s wardrobe in the music video, saying the singer was dressed “berkemban”.

This refers to a style in which a sarong is tied at chest level, leaving the shoulders bare. The sarong was used like a towel to cover the body before and after baths back when showers were conducted outside the home.

In her apology, Mimifly explained that she was drawn to the comfort and aesthetic style of Malay clothing from the past.

Hindu goddess-like dance

Besides that, Rafiza criticised Mimifly for a section in the video in which the singer was in the foreground and a few dancers were hidden behind her, stretching out their arms.

This dance technique focuses on the person in front and makes them look as if they have many extra arms. It references the Dance of Thousand-hand Guanyin.

Rafiza claimed this made Mimifly look like the Hindu goddess Durga, who is depicted with many arms.

Before Islamisation during the sultanate era, some Malays were Hindu due to South Asian influence.

Hindu and South Asian influences can still be seen in traditional Malay dances and attire, along with Sanskrit words in the Malay language.

Rafiza went on to highlight Aidilfitri’s religious significance.

“Hari Raya Aidilfitri is not a cultural or racial celebration. Hari Raya Aidilfitri itself in Islam is a day to magnify Allah,” she asserted.

She urged all artists to consider all sensitivities, including those related to Islam, before producing their work.
