PSM to contest in Ayer Kuning polls, announcing candidate on April 8

PSM will contest the upcoming Ayer Kuning by-election, according to its deputy president S Arutchelvan.

He said the PSM central committee, at a meeting last night, has decided to support its Perak chapter's decision to field a candidate in the state seat.

Arutchelvan also said the party will reveal its candidate on April 8, ahead of nominations on April 12.

"Placing a third alternative candidate in a contest between two major coalitions is indeed a difficult decision because the first-past-the-post voting system gives an advantage to the two main competing parties," Arutchelvan said in a statement today.

However, Arutchelvan said his party decided to contest based on several factors, which include factors like PSM had previously contested the seat in the last general election.

In GE15, PSM's candidate Bawani KS with 586 votes ranked fourth and lost her deposit in a five-corner contest.

"PSM’s participation in the by-election can help us gauge public support for the party - whether it has increased or declined," said Arutchelvan, adding that the party serves as an alternative between two main options from the ruling and opposition coalition.

"A contest between Umno-BN and PAS-PN will likely lead to racial sentiments, in line with the strategy of both parties to gain support without regard for the harmony of a pluralistic society.

"Therefore, PSM serves as an alternative for all who identify with the struggles of the working class - an important essence for those seeking a third path," he stressed.

Among others, Arutchlevan said PSM will continue to promote a narrative that goes beyond race, with core issues such as the cost of living, healthcare, workers’ and farmers’ rights, environmental issues, as well as problems faced by the indigenous communities and ordinary citizens.

Polling for the Ayer Kuning by-election will be held on April 26, while early nominations open on April 22.
