Summary

  • Anwar Ibrahim reminds members that PKR is more than just a political party.

  • He wants leaders with integrity, who are trustworthy and champion the voice of the people.

PKR president Anwar Ibrahim has urged party members to elect leaders of unwavering integrity, trustworthiness and champion people’s voice.

“As I have often emphasised – Keadilan (PKR) is not just a political party, but a platform for the people’s struggle,” he said in a Facebook post.

“God willing, our efforts and endeavours will be made easier for the sake of a more just and prosperous Malaysia for all,” he added.

The prime minister also called on members to uphold ethical values and a spirit of unity in electing the party's new leadership lineup in the upcoming party elections next month.

He said the 2025 PKR election must be conducted in a spirit of togetherness - with full adherence to ethics and must steer clear of divisive practices.

At the same time, Anwar extended his best wishes to all candidates and PKR members participating in this party election.

Backpedalling on pledges

PKR and Pakatan Harapan rose to prominence on the back of a strong reformist agenda. It promised sweeping changes to the political and institutional landscape, pledging to tackle corruption, ensure judicial independence, and reduce the concentration of power in the executive.

The coalition positioned itself as a clean break from the entrenched patronage and authoritarianism associated with previous regimes.

However, since coming to power, Anwar’s government has been criticised for a perceived lack of urgency in delivering on these promises.

Worse, some observers have accused the current administration of backpedalling on reforms.

On Jan 26, it was reported that PKR had decided that elections for positions in the central leadership council, the central women’s leadership council, and the central Youth leadership council would be held on May 24.

PKR secretary-general Fuziah Salleh stated that elections for positions at the division level, division women’s wing, and division youth wing would take place from April 11 to 20.
