'Man' elected into PKR Women's branch, party clarifies it's a typo

A PKR Election Committee official clarified it was a candidate’s “mistake” that led to confusion over a man being elected as a Baling PKR Women’s Wing committee member.

When contacted, former Sungai Buloh MP Sivarasa Rasiah, who is one of three signatories on all official results, confirmed the name “Rajamani a/l Arumugam” belonged to a woman.

“We have checked this out. Rajamani is actually a woman.

“She made a ‘typo’ when she did her registration for the election,” he told Malaysiakini today.

Sivarasa (above) said Rajamani mistakenly wrote “a/l”, which refers to “anak lelaki” (son of), when she should have put “a/p”, which refers to “anak perempuan” (daughter of).

The former PKR vice-president said this when asked for comments on a screenshot of the official Baling PKR Women’s Wing election result that listed “Rajamani a/l Arumugam” as one of seven names elected as the division’s committee members.

Malaysiakini understands the screenshot was shared across various PKR-linked WhatsApp groups, with questions raised surrounding the election committee’s verification of the election results so far after the end of polling in seven states.

Aside from Sivarasa, all official election results will be signed by PKR Election Committee chief Dr Zaliha Mustafa, as well as an external auditor.

PKR has since announced that all candidates for elections conducted on May 11, 12, and 13 will have until 5pm on May 16 to file an appeal with the Election Committee, with a fee of RM100 for each appeal.
