Summary:
A state funeral for former prime minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi will be held today at the National Mosque, with burial at the Heroes’ Mausoleum.
The Jalur Gemilang must be flown half-mast within a 2km radius of the mosque, covering key areas in Kuala Lumpur.
The public may pay respects from 11am to 1pm, with appropriate dress codes enforced for all visitors.
The Prime Minister’s Department has declared that a state funeral will be held for the late former prime minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi at the National Mosque today.
“All buildings within a 2km radius from the National Mosque are to fly the Jalur Gemilang at half-mast until the funeral is complete,” it said in a statement just past midnight today.
Checks by Malaysiakini found that the 2km radius would cover much of the southwestern part of Kuala Lumpur and surrounding areas.
This includes landmarks such as Dataran Merdeka, the Parliament complex, Bank Negara, KL Sentral, Galeria Sri Perdana, Bukit Aman police headquarters, Petaling Street, the Merdeka 118 tower, Lalaport Bukit Bintang Shopping Centre, and the Sogo department store.
It also covers parts of Brickfields, Bukit Bintang, and Federal Hill.
The PMD statement also confirmed many of the details of the funeral previously announced by Abdullah’s son-in-law Khairy Jamaluddin.
It said Abdullah’s remains will be brought to the National Mosque at 8am for funeral arrangements.
Members of the public can pay their last respects from 11am to 1pm.
“The funeral prayer will be performed after the zuhur prayer at the National Mosque, and the burial will follow at the Heroes’ Mausoleum, National Mosque, Kuala Lumpur,” it said.
Muslim male visitors are required to wear a black national dress with a plain black samping and a black songkok, while non-Muslim male visitors are required to wear a dark lounge suit.
Muslim female visitors are required to wear a dark-coloured baju kurung or kebaya labuh with a white headscarf or shawl, while non-Muslim women are to dress modestly in dark-coloured attire with a white shawl.
Other appropriate attire may also be worn.
Abdullah served as Malaysia’s fifth prime minister from Oct 31, 2003, until April 3, 2009.
He breathed his last at the National Heart Institute at 7.10pm yesterday, surrounded by family members. He was 85.
