Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has defended the government’s move to renew MACC chief commissioner Azam Baki's contract for another term, despite criticism from opposition lawmakers and civil society.

Speaking at the official opening of the PKR national congress in Johor Bahru tonight, Anwar acknowledged the concerns raised but insisted that Azam has shown “extraordinary courage” in tackling high-level corruption.

“There are those who talk, and the opposition is making noise about the extension of Azam’s contract. I want to say that I do not deny the criticisms that have been raised,” said the PKR president during his speech at the Persada Johor International Convention Centre.

Anwar stressed that this was the first time in his experience that the MACC had taken firm action against powerful individuals with billions in assets, including influential businesspersons.

“I believe, having observed the MACC over the decades, this is the first time they have dared to raid all the big bosses.

“Yes, that’s a fact. I can replace him and discuss it with my cabinet colleagues, I can appoint a new one tomorrow - but I am not confident that the new person would dare confront billionaires,” he said.

Political will

The Tambun MP added that the MACC’s efforts now extend to high-profile individuals with honorific titles, and this requires political will and public support to maintain momentum.

“Figures with titles like Tan Sri, Tun, and Datuk Seri… In my view, we need to give some room to those entrusted to take action. I have no reason to doubt the courage of the MACC chief commissioner (Azam) to act firmly, because I’ve never seen such boldness from his predecessors,” he said.

Anwar also took aim at his critics, including opposition politicians and social activists, whom he accused of failing to back the MACC when it went after the elite.

“But those who criticise - I see some from the opposition - some civil society groups making noise. I’ve never heard them support the MACC when it acts against these billion-ringgit tycoons,” he said.

He lamented that the commission’s enforcement actions were often mischaracterised as acts of political vengeance, despite a lack of public endorsement for the agency’s bold moves.

“They don’t even mention it, and some quietly support (the actions). I cannot accept this. There’s no support, and when action is taken, they call it vindictiveness,” he said.

On May 13, Chief Secretary to the Government Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar confirmed Azam’s reappointment as MACC chief for another year, with the consent of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong.

The extension will run until May 12, 2026.
