US President Donald Trump has agreed to postpone the imposition of a 50 percent tariff on European Union (EU) goods to July 9, following a phone call with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, Anadolu Ajansi reported.

In a post on his Truth Social platform on Sunday, Trump said Von der Leyen requested the extension during their conversation, and that negotiations “will begin rapidly.”

He described the decision to grant the extension as “a privilege.”

Von der Leyen also confirmed the phone call and said the EU is ready to move “swiftly and decisively” to advance trade talks.

“To reach a good deal, we would need the time until July 9,” she said.

Trump had earlier threatened to impose the steep tariff beginning June 1, citing what he described as unfair trade practices and barriers that were harming US companies.

The exchange indicates a temporary easing of trade tensions between Washington and Brussels, although significant differences remain over tariffs, subsidies and regulatory standards.
