PM launches Kota Madani smart city project in Putrajaya

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim today launched the Kota Madani development project in Presint 19, Putrajaya, a major smart city initiative designed to be people-centric and environmentally sustainable.

The RM4 billion project will be developed by Putrajaya Holdings Sdn Bhd through a public-private partnership under the build, lease, maintain and transfer model, without utilising government funds at the initial stage.

Anwar proposed that the project be adopted as a model for urban planning and development across the country.

He said such development should not be dictated solely by developers but must be planned through a comprehensive approach that prioritises the people's well-being.

He stressed that state governments and local authorities must stop relying entirely on developers’ proposals and instead play a central role in urban planning that incorporates cultural values, humanity and quality of life.

"Do not simply submit to the developers. We are the ones who do the planning; the developers are just part of the process to provide input for improvement.

"Do not let projects be decided solely by developers, because if so, they will naturally provide views and recommendations that are profit-driven," he said.

Kota Madani will feature 10,000 high-density residential units capable of accommodating over 30,000 residents, along with vertical schools and various public amenities.

The development will integrate artificial intelligence, smart digital infrastructure, and green mobility systems.

Planned public facilities include Technical and Vocational Education and Training institutions, schools, health clinics, fire and police stations, a mosque, and financial institutions - all designed with local cultural elements to preserve architectural heritage.

The first phase of development is scheduled to begin in September and is expected to be completed by the end of 2027.

The project is part of the government’s commitment to realising the Malaysia Madani vision and Chase (clean, healthy, advanced, safe, and sustainable) city goals.

Kota Madani is poised to become a pioneering model for future urban development in Malaysia and a benchmark for other areas.
