Umno postpones general assembly to focus on Sabah polls

The Umno general assembly this year will be held in November rather than August to allow preparations for the 17th Sabah state election, which must be held by year-end.

Umno secretary-general Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki said the party’s supreme council, which met last night, had decided on Nov 26 to Nov 29 as the new dates for the annual gathering of delegates.

“The dates for the 2025 Umno general assembly have been agreed to be postponed to Nov 26-29, 2025, taking into account preparations for the Sabah state election,” Asyraf said in a statement after the meeting in Kuala Lumpur.

The general assembly was originally set for Aug 20-23.

The postponement comes as the Sabah legislative assembly’s term is set to expire on Nov 11, signalling that the state polls are drawing near.

Meanwhile, Asyraf said Umno will also conduct a mid-term review to assess the performance of the federal coalition government.

“This includes assessing the achievements of Umno leaders in the administration, as well as in government-linked and government-owned agencies,” said Asyraf, who is also Mara chairperson.

Umno has six ministers in the cabinet, including party president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi as deputy prime minister as well as rural and regional development minister, and five deputy ministers.

The party had lost one minister after International Trade and Investment Minister Tengku Zafrul Abdul Aziz quit Umno to join PKR.

Zahid, at the time, expressed hope that Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim would reinstate Umno’s seven-minister quota.

On June 1, Anwar said there is no urgency to carry out a cabinet reshuffle following not only Zafrul’s defection, but also the resignations of former economy minister Rafizi Ramli as well as former natural resources and environmental sustainability minister Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad.
