The MACC has announced that personnel with a body mass index (BMI) exceeding 27 will be ineligible for promotion, beginning January 2026.

New Straits Times reported chief commissioner Azam Baki saying MACC is giving officers a six-month grace period to shed the extra pounds, before the rather weighty new rule takes effect.

He reportedly said it was aimed at addressing obesity issues among his officers.

“There will be no promotions for MACC staff whose BMI exceeds 27, starting January next year.

“Police have already implemented a BMI limit of 26. We (MACC) are now doing the same, as the commission is an important enforcement agency,” he was quoted as saying.

Azam said a circular on the matter would also be distributed next month, and that staff at all MACC departments would be required to undergo health screenings.

“They are required to conduct the screening every three months at government hospitals.

“Public servants who are overweight are more likely to suffer from various health issues.

“Obesity in the public sector must be addressed and the matter should not be taken lightly,” Azam said, adding that fit and presentable officers would be able to perform their public duties better.
