Minister: Govt ready to care for girl allegedly raped by mum's boyfriend

The Social Welfare Department is ready to take temporary care of a girl believed to have been raped by her mother’s boyfriend last year.

Women, Family, and Community Development Minister Nancy Shukri said this is to ensure the child’s welfare and safety, should there be no suitable or capable family member to care for her.

“Apart from physical protection, victims also deserve appropriate psychosocial support to assist in the emotional and mental recovery process,” she said in a statement today.

Nancy was referring to the case of a girl, who was allegedly raped by her biological mother’s boyfriend, a nasi lemak vendor, at a house in Hulu Langat, Selangor, mid-last year.

She was 12 at the time.

The 61-year-old man was charged at the Ampang Sessions Court today, while the girl’s mother, 37, also faces a charge of abetment.

The court denied bail for the duo and fixed Aug 7 for case mention, following their pleas of not guilty. The victim is residing with her aunt.

Commenting further, Nancy described the case as deeply troubling and stressed that such offences cannot be tolerated in a society that values the safety and dignity of children.

“I wish to emphasise that protecting children is a collective responsibility that must be treated with utmost seriousness,” she said, urging the public to stay alert and speak out against child abuse instead of remaining silent.
