Albert wants IGP to explain delay on report against Musa's son-in-law

The businessperson charged in connection with Sabah's graft scandal has urged Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Khalid Ismail to clarify the police’s inaction over his report against Arifin Arif for allegedly lodging a false police report.

Lawyer Mahajoth Singh said he accompanied his client, Albert Tei, to file a complaint with the Independent Police Conduct Commission (IPCC) in Putrajaya this morning over the issue involving the son-in-law of Sabah Governor Musa Aman.

"I must stress that more than six months have passed since my client lodged his report.

"Within that time, we requested updates from the investigating officer, district police chief and finally the Attorney-General's Chambers, but there were none," Mahajoth told Malaysiakini.

"Premised on that, we would like to call on the IGP to answer why there is such a delay? Why the inaction?" he asked.

Tei's Feb 6 report lodged at Serdang district police station was filed in response to Arifin's report against a Malaysiakini article that exposed an alleged settlement offer from the state minister to the whistleblower.

Tei, in his counter report, claimed that the Membakut assemblyperson - one of the individuals accused of taking bribes in exchange for a prospecting licence - had filed a “false report” alleging that the Malaysiakini Feb 3 article was inaccurate, misleading, and filled with false and slanderous claims.

‘Check with Dang Wangi’

Following Malaysiakini's report yesterday that they would be filing an IPCC complaint, Mahajoth said he received only a brief response from Serdang district police chief Farid Ahmad.

"I received a letter from Serdang IPD yesterday evening, but it only asked us 'to check with Dang Wangi' (police).

"So there was still no response to our requests for updates to the (Feb 6) report," he stressed.

He pointed out that every police station will display a warning against repercussions for lodging a "false report", and therefore it is "absurd" that they have received no updates regarding investigations against Arifin after six months.

Mahajoth added that his client will be issued an official complaint number within 24 hours of lodging the complaint, and the matter will be raised to an IPCC committee next week.
