Umno urges house arrest for Najib after AGC confirms addendum

Umno hopes a decision by the Attorney-General’s Chambers (AGC) not to dispute the existence of the alleged royal addendum will allow former prime minister Najib Abdul Razak to be placed under house arrest.

Party secretary-general Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki said in a statement that, as the AGC has confirmed the addendum existed, this acknowledges the royal decree for Najib’s home detention.

“It is hoped that by the grace of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, that Najib may be granted a reduction in his sentence, which has been delayed for over a year,” said Asyraf.

On Wednesday, senior federal counsel Shamsul Bolhassan reportedly said the AGC did not dispute the addendum’s existence but was challenging how it was submitted as new evidence in Najib’s judicial review application at the High Court.

“Whatever the procedure may be, it must be followed when introducing new evidence,” said Shamsul as quoted by the New Straits Times.

The new evidence refers to an affidavit filed by the former prime minister’s son, Nizar Najib, which included a copy of the addendum decree he purportedly received from the office of the Pahang sultan.

Najib has been serving time at Kajang Prison since Aug 23, 2022, after his conviction in an abuse of power, criminal breach of trust, and money laundering case involving RM42 million from SRC International, a former subsidiary of troubled sovereign wealth fund 1MDB.

Najib is relying on the existence of the royal addendum to back his civil court bid to compel the Home Ministry and the Prison Department to execute the house arrest.
