160 Umno division heads call PM to execute ex-Agong's addendum order

A majority of Umno division leaders reminded Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim - no more excuses for not executing the royal addendum allowing Najib Abdul Razak to serve the rest of his jail sentence under house arrest.

The statement was endorsed by 160 out of 191 Umno division chiefs today.

Wangsa Maju Umno division chief Shafei Abdullah reminded the government that the Pahang palace confirmed the existence of the document in a letter dated Jan 4, in addition to the Court of Appeal’s verdict on Jan 6.

He also hurled brickbats at former attorney-general Ahmad Terrirudin Mohd Salleh, accusing the latter of hiding the addendum for over a year.

He added that such an act went against the principles of transparency and accountability, and was a disrespect to the supremacy of the Constitution.

“The action had also sullied the Agong and Malay rulers’ discretionary powers, in addition to denying justice to Najib.

“So, we urge the prime minister to take full responsibility and ensure the addendum order is executed, as consented by the previous Agong.

“There is no reason to delay the matter any longer,” Shafei said during a press conference after attending a meeting with fellow Umno division heads in Kuala Lumpur today.

Terrirudin now serves as a Federal Court judge.

The Pahang palace confirmed that the previous Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Pahang ruler Sultan Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah, had issued a royal addendum concerning the house arrest for Najib.

Najib’s counsel Shafee Abdullah tabled the letter from the Pahang palace before the Court of Appeal.

The letter, signed by the Comptroller of the Royal Household for the Sultan of Pahang Ahmad Khirrizal Ab Rahman, confirmed that Sultan Abdullah ordered Najib to serve the remainder of his jail term under house arrest.

On Jan 11, Anwar acknowledged that the attorney-general (AG) did receive a letter regarding the royal addendum.

However, he said that after the letter was received, the Yang di-Pertuan Agong changed, and the AG submitted the letter to Istana Negara to allow the newly appointed Agong, Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar, to make a decision.

“The decision (addendum) was sent to the AG… not to me… not to members of the Pardons Board.

“And the AG, when the new Agong was installed, (the AG) sent to Istana Negara as the king chairs it (the Pardons Board).

“That’s the situation… we didn’t hide anything,” Anwar added.

Form RCI, but execute addendum order first

On that note, Shafei also called for the government to form a royal commission of inquiry (RCI) to investigate Terrirudin for allegedly withholding information in regard to the existence of the addendum.

However, he said the priority now is to ensure the government executes the addendum order.

“As the top legal adviser to the government, the AG should uphold the royal decree and side with justice, not be a stumbling block.

“We need it (the RCI), but it may delay our objective. To me, execute it (the addendum). We have lodged a police report, but nothing came out of it.

“So, the execution of the royal addendum is more important than forming an RCI,” he added.

Shafei also urged current AG Dusuki Mokhtar to withdraw his appeal against the addendum order.

On what they would do if Putrajaya ignored their request, Shafei said, “We cross the bridge when we come to it.”

Meanwhile, he urged the other Umno divisions which have yet to convene their general meetings to table a motion in regard to the addendum issue when they meet.

“The motion is important to show our solidarity in preserving the sanctity of the Malay rulers and ensuring justice for all,” he added.
